Performing A Job Search
Job Search
People find jobs in order to earn a living. Most people rely on their main capital, which is labor, in order to pay for their needs and wants. However, not everyone is able to find jobs. This is called unemployment. Unemployment is defined as a condition where those who are willing and able cannot find jobs. Unemployment is quite common in all societies whether rich or poor. During times of crisis such as a recession, the unemployment rate goes up because more people lose their jobs and job opportunities lessen.
Performing a job search during recession is difficult. During a recession, the overall economic activity of a geographical area is reduced. This means that firms produce less goods and services. As a result, many people are laid off their jobs due to retrenchment. What is worse is that those who are seeking employment cannot find jobs. The rate of school graduates who are about to enter the labor force increases more than the rate of jobs created and available in the job market.
There are various cases of employment where people who have particular skills and has been trained for a particular profession is holding a job not related to that person’s skills or training. This phenomenon is called underemployment. In underemployment, people who have received training for a particular occupation or profession and who possess skills for a particular industry settle for a job that is not related to the skills that they possess or training that they underwent. Various reasons may be attributed to underemployment, but the most common one is the lack of job opportunities in the job market that are related to their skills or training.
In performing a job search, especially during times of recession, one has to be resourceful and to be street smart in order to succeed. One also has to consider whether one is willing to be underemployed or not. In fact, there are certain well-educated people who opt to be unemployed rather than settle for a less desirable job and be underemployed.
In order to have a successful job search, whether during the recession or not, it is important to exhaust all your resources. This can be done by looking up your network or contact list and see if there is any person who can help you land a job. You can also look into your favor bank. This means that look for persons who owe you a favor, probably because of a favor that you have done for them in the past, and see if they can help you find the job that you are looking for. You can also join networking communities online. There are professional networking communities where you can join and expand your social and professional network.
You may also consider investing on education or trainings. You can learn the skills and trade of certain professions or occupations that are currently in demand. By doing this strategy, you are not only engaging in self-enrichment, but also you are making yourself more marketable in the labor market.
Finding a job is not easy, but with the right connections and the right background, finding a job that you desire will not be far to reach.
